Tapped holes offer a cost savings over inserted hardware. However, the hold strength is relative to the number of engaged threads. If strength is a concern, extruded holes offer an option to increase the number of engaged threads.
To eliminate fasteners all together interlocking parts was the way to go.
When possible, avoid conditions falling below minimum flange guidelines as outlined in this table. Features above minimum flange guidelines
When possible, use absolute minimum flange guidelines relative to tapped and hardware hole edges. A relief-cut in the material will allow the tapped or hardware to be place closer to the flange.
This table indicates the maximum inside leg lengths "L" that can be achieved relative to the channel inside width "W" using standard Gooseneck tooling.
Standardizing dimples, embosses, or special shape cut outs reduces tooling costs when going to production.
