Surface Treatments for Precision Metal Products

By coordinating the following surface treatment options within the broader fabrication process, Dalsin helps customers address finishing requirements without separating them from design, manufacturability, material selection, welding, forming, assembly, and documentation.

Supported Finishes & Materials

  • Pre-finished and specialty materials: galvanized, electro-galvanized, galvannealed, galvalume, aluminized, polished, pre-grained, pre-primed, pre-painted, diamond plate, perforated, embossed, poly film masked, and sheet stock.

  • Paint, coating, and marking processes: powder coating, liquid painting, e-coating, screen printing, and pad printing.

  • Plating and conversion finishes: RoHS-compliant zinc plating, electro-plating, electroless plating, nickel, electroless nickel, tin, black oxide, chromate conversion coating, and chemfilm.

  • Material-specific treatments: anodizing for aluminum, passivation for stainless steel, electropolishing, heat treating, and heat treatment.

  • Mechanical finishing and preparation: graining, straight-line finishing, grinding, deburring, media deburring, tumbling, blasting, shot blasting, bead blasting, sand blasting, and peening.

Powder Coating for OEM Metal Parts and Assemblies

Dalsin is highly experienced in powder coat finishing for parts ranging from large assembled panels and weldments to small brackets and piece parts. Our powder coating operation includes 627 feet of automated conveyors, a five-stage wash and nanotechnology conversion process, an automated electrostatic powder coating booth, and high-capacity dry-off and cure ovens.

For customers, the advantage is practical: powder coating can be planned alongside fabrication. Dalsin’s team can account for part geometry, bends, flanges, weld areas, masking needs, handling points, cure requirements, and final assembly considerations before production moves downstream.

Powder Coating Process Controls

  • Cleaning and Pretreatment: Finish performance begins with proper cleaning. Dalsin’s process includes degreasing, RO rinsing, and a non-phosphate nanotechnology conversion treatment designed to support corrosion resistance while reducing chemical usage, sludge, phosphorus in wastewater, and energy requirements.
  • Automated Powder Application: Dalsin’s electrostatic powder coating booth features Parker Ionics automation with photo-eye part recognition and guns using Super Power Pulse technology. This helps improve powder penetration into hard-to-reach areas on formed, welded, and fabricated metal parts.
  • Dry-off and Cure Control: Dalsin’s dry-off and cure ovens operate at controlled, balanced temperatures to support consistent drying and predictable cure cycles. The ovens can process 15,000 pounds of parts per hour, and temperature consistency is periodically validated using a Datapaq system.

Why Integrated Finishing Matters

When finishing is disconnected from fabrication, problems often appear late in the process. A formed edge may be difficult to coat. A weld area may need extra preparation. A part may require masking that was not considered in the original design. A cosmetic surface may need a different material, grain direction, or handling method.

Dalsin helps reduce these risks by treating surface finish as part of the manufacturing plan. Our team can evaluate how a part will be cut, formed, welded, cleaned, coated, treated, assembled, packed, and delivered. That coordination helps improve manufacturability, reduce unnecessary process steps, and support finished part quality.

For OEMs, integrated finishing also simplifies supplier management. Instead of coordinating fabrication with one vendor, finishing with another, and assembly with a third, customers can work with a manufacturing partner that understands how each process affects the next.

Many OEM programs also require documentation for RoHS compliance, material standards, finishing requirements, and other international compliance needs. Dalsin supports these requirements on a project-by-project basis and maintains the documentation needed to provide certificates of compliance when required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Dalsin Industries' in-house powder coating line capabilities and production capacity?

Dalsin Industries operates an automated production powder coating line capable of processing up to 15,000 pounds of metal parts per hour. Our high-capacity finishing system features a 627-foot automated conveyor network, a multi-stage non-phosphate nanotechnology pretreatment wash, and an automated electrostatic powder booth utilizing Parker Ionics automation with Super Power Pulse technology. This infrastructure allows us to deliver consistent, repeatable, and durable finishes for high-volume OEM parts, complex weldments, enclosures, and large panels.

Does Dalsin Industries provide RoHS-compliant metal finishes and documentation?

Yes, Dalsin Industries supports RoHS compliance across our surface treatments and provides official Certificates of Compliance (CoC) upon request. Our steel finishing options include RoHS-compliant trivalent zinc plating, as well as environmentally friendly, non-phosphate nanotechnology conversion coatings used during our in-house powder coating pretreatment process. We maintain meticulous documentation control on a project-by-project basis to satisfy the strict tracking requirements of regulated, specification-driven OEM programs.

What surface treatments are available for aluminum and stainless steel parts?

Dalsin provides specialized chemical and mechanical finishes for aluminum and stainless steel, utilizing both in-house capabilities and a qualified partner network. For aluminum components, we coordinate anodizing and chromate conversion coatings (chemfilm) to improve corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. For stainless steel parts, we provide passivation and electropolishing to remove surface iron and maximize the material's natural corrosion resistance, alongside mechanical finishes like graining, straight-line finishing, and bead blasting.

How does integrating metal fabrication with finishing reduce production risks for OEMs?

Integrating fabrication and finishing under a single partner eliminates late-stage manufacturing defects by addressing coating constraints during the initial design phase. When finishing is disconnected from fabrication, issues like un-maskable geometries, hard-to-reach weld areas, or incorrect grain directions often go unnoticed until it is too late. Dalsin’s engineering team reviews part geometry, bends, flanges, masking needs, and handling points before production begins, reducing outside supplier handoffs and improving overall process control.

Can Dalsin handle powder coating for complex geometries or heavy weldments?

Yes, our automated powder coating line and electrostatic application systems are specifically engineered to handle complex fabricated shapes, large panels, and heavy weldments. Our Parker Ionics spray booths utilize photo-eye part recognition and specialized pulse gun technology to ensure maximum transfer efficiency and deep powder penetration into recessed areas, tight bends, and intricate fabrications. Temperature profiles across our high-capacity dry-off and cure ovens are continuously validated using Datapaq tracking systems to guarantee an even, predictable cure on parts of varying thermal mass.
